About

Located in Perry Barr, just outside of the city centre, the Alexander Stadium is an international-standard athletics venue and used for the Commonwealth Games when it will host the athletics as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.

Capacity is increased from 12,700 to 20,000 in order to support the international events. The home of the world-renowned Birchfield Harriers Athletics Club, the stadium has played host to major events, including The Diamond League series, including the British Grand Prix.

About the Alexander Stadium

One of the principal locations to host the Commonwealth Games, the Alexander Stadium will host events such as the Opening as well as Closing Ceremonies.Athletes are also expected to compete at track events between August 2 to 7 , at the venue that was renovated prior to the Games.With the brand new West Stand in place, the stadium can accommodate 18,000 people in its present configuration in addition to temporary stands that will boost the capacity to 30,000 during the Games.First inaugurated on the 26th of July in 1976. The stadium was transformed into the venue for UK Athletics in 2011 following an overhaul that saw the creation of a seating capacity of 5,000 in the East Stand on the backstraight.Since hosting its inaugural Diamond League Meeting that year the stadium continued to host races like the British Grand Prix up until its closing to allow to allow for the renovation.Post-Games, and the ongoing staging of major athletic events The stadium will be an important place for social and recreational activities in the newly developed Perry Barr district of Birmingham that is getting more than PS700million investments ahead of Birmingham 2022.The opening time is Alexander Stadium Opening Information: Alexander Stadium is open for two hours prior to session starts. There is no parking in or around the venue, with the exception of the blue badge parking that is limited, which is required to be pre-booked.BSL Interpretation The BSL interpreter will be on hand during both our Closing and Opening Ceremonies that will be held in the Stadium. If you are interested in using this service but not yet received a call for assistance, do not hesitate to call us.

accessibility: In order to facilitate access to the entire site, an internal as well as accessible golf buggy service externally will be in operation. Also, there will be an Accessible Golf Bus that will connect the Blue Badge Parking as well as the the venue. The venue also has restrooms that change places which can be found in the West Stand.

Due to the closing times during these events, you must make sure to plan your trip to home well in advance. Shuttle services are available for you to return towards Birmingham City Centre, but they’ll be crowded, so make sure you allow enough time for connecting to the next service as well as be mindful of the last services.
